Surf Life Saving announces return of The Aussies to Perth in 2022
Surf Life Saving Australia has today announced that Western Australia will again play host to one of the world’s largest surf sports events when the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships (The Aussies) returns in 2022.
Backing the event through its through Tourism WA agency, the Western Australian Government will be aiming to repeat the success of this year’s event in Scarborough, which attracted 8,578 visitors - more than 5,000 of whom were competitors - who spent $15.8 million during the event. Prior to 2018, the last time the Aussies was held in WA was in 2014.
Commenting on the 2022 hosting, Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan stated “the Aussies is a perfect example of the type of mass participation event we're aiming to attract to Western Australia.
"Not only does it attract thousands of competitors but they are often accompanied by a parent or other support crew, which means more visitors to WA.
"We're hoping to see another great turnout and an even bigger boost to the economy when the championships return in 2022."
SLSA President Graham Ford is also looking forward to the event, adding “Western Australia’s beaches provide the perfect amphitheatres for The Aussies for both competitors and spectators alike and we look forward to returning in 2022.”
