Surf Life Saving Championships commence in Perth
The 2014 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships have commenced at Scarborough Beach in Western Australia, with surf lifesavers from 190 Australian clubs competing in 382 events including surf boat and ski races, beach events and the ironman and ironwoman competitions.
Running from 31st March to 6th April, the event is attracting more than 5,000 surf lifesavers and thousands of visitors in what is expected to be a major boost for tourism in Western Australia.
Western Australian Tourism Minister Liza Harvey welcomed the return of the event, being held in Perth for the first time since 2009, stating “the championships are expected to attract thousands of visitors and West Australians to watch all the action from the beach, providing a significant boost to the local economy and adding vibrancy to Scarborough
“The 2014 championships will also be broadcast on the Nine Network to millions of people across the nation, providing valuable exposure for WA’s extraordinary coastline.
“Mass participation events such as the ‘Aussies’ play an important role in helping us achieve our goal of increasing the value of tourism in Western Australia to $12 billion by 2020.”
The Australian Surf Life Saving Championships are proudly supported by the State Government through Tourism WA.
Minister Harvey concluded “it is a fantastic coup for WA to host The Aussies once again at Scarborough, which is currently undergoing a significant $30million revitalisation program to transform the area into a world-class tourism destination.”
Surf Life Saving Australia has announced that the 2015 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships will return to Queensland’s Gold Coast in 2015, being held from the 13th to19th April at North Kirra Beach.
