Surf lifesavers to descend on Scarborough

Competitors from Australia's 311 surf clubs, along with thousands of visitors, are expected at the 2018 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships in Perth next month.

Set to attract more than 5,000 competitors to Scarborough Beach the annual event (sometimes referred to as ‘The Aussies’) will feature more than 400 beach and ocean events. In addition to competitors, thousands more are expected to attend as spectators and support crew.

Being held from 14th to 22nd April, the event will showcase recent transformations at Scarborough Beach, as well as new developments across the city, to the nation.

Supporting mass participation events such as The Aussies forms part of Tourism WA's plan to grow the number of visitors to Western Australia over the next two years.

Looking forward to the event, Western Australian Tourism Minister Paul Papalia stated “a lot has changed since Western Australia last hosted the championships in 2014, with Scarborough undergoing a $100 million revitalisation to make it one of Australia's best beachfront destinations.

"Our new world-class Optus Stadium, the redevelopment of Perth Airport, the construction of the Elizabeth Quay waterfront precinct, the sinking of the railway line between Northbridge and the CBD, thousands of new hotel rooms, as well as a flourishing dining and entertainment scene have made Perth a fantastic place to be, both for locals, and for visitors to the State.

"Mass participation events such as The Aussies are important as they encourage high levels of visitation which helps to fill our hotel rooms, boost our economy, add vibrancy to the State, and help promote the State through media exposure.

"To everyone visiting WA, I hope you enjoy your stay and encourage you to explore our extraordinary State."

The event is sponsored by the Western Australian Government through Tourism WA.
