Supreme Heating technology reduces energy costs at Bundaberg’s Isis War Memorial Swimming Pool

An energy-efficient heating system from Supreme Heating installed at Bundaberg Regional Council’s Isis War Memorial Swimming Pool - that offers year-round swimming to patrons with a minimum water temperature of 27-28C - has dramatically reduced the facility’s energy costs.

Originally built as an outdoor pool, the Isis War Memorial Swimming Pool (also known as the Childers Pool), a 2019 Request For Tender (RFT) from the Council required the construction of a solid share structure and a sustainable heating system to cover and heat the pool (making it a year-round indoor facility). The proposed roof surface of 700-800 metre² and requirement for installing of minimising Whole of Life Costs limited the team.

Supreme Heating proposed a two-in-one solution with their product, Heatseeker Dualsun. The hybrid photovoltaic (PV) panel simultaneously provides electricity and thermal water, offering a solution to their energy needs and minimising rooftop surface requirements. The system achieves both the Council’s pool heating needs and energy concerns in one footprint.

Supreme Heating designed a solution consisting of a 33.60kW Heatseeker DualSun PVT solar system coupled with a 216m Heatseeker Plus traditional strip solar system and two 120kW inverter heat pumps to meet the heating requirements of the pool. With a combined renewable thermal output of 285kWh, the system provides ample capacity to offset the reliance on the heat pumps to maintain the Council’s 700,000L indoor swimming pool to average temperatures of 28C throughout the swimming season.

The Heatseeker DualSun system is also capable of generating electricity at an average of 133kWh/day, reducing the operational expenditure of the pool heating system together with the heat pumps.

With average energy savings of $31,266 per annum, the Council can expect their Heatseeker DualSun system to pay for itself within just six years based on current energy prices, minimising Whole of Life Costs.

Reopened in January 2020, the $1.7 million was funded by  $1.3 million from the Council, $100,000 from Bendigo Bank and $300,000 from the Federal Government under the Community Development Grant program.
