Supercross set to shine at Aussie MotoGP
The cream of Australian motorcycling's on and off-road talent is set to come together at Phillip Island, with confirmation that the Australian Supercross Championship will feature alongside the 2012 AirAsia Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix from 26th to 28th October.
Up to 120 competitors will take part in round two of the Australian Supercross Championship on a new track located in the Lukey Heights precinct at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.
The purpose-built arena will feature racing on the Saturday and Sunday of the Grand Prix event with prime spectator viewing for all event ticket holders at no extra cost - another incentive for fans to attend the biggest two-wheel motorsport event on the Australian calendar.
Dirt bikes have been the breeding ground for a host of star Australian road racers, with five-time 500cc World Champion Mick Doohan, 1987 World Champion Wayne Gardner and reigning two-time MotoGP World Champion Casey Stoner all cutting their teeth in off-road racing.
Australian Grand Prix Corporation Chief Executive Andrew Westacott, said the announcement means a ticket to the AirAsia Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix is now better value than ever.
Westacott explained "the inclusion of the Australian Supercross Championship as part of our off-track entertainment package will create a real festival atmosphere for motorcycle enthusiasts and all fans of top-level motorsport.
"With Casey Stoner looking for a sixth consecutive MotoGP win at his home track before his retirement, Australians in all three World Championship categories and now the addition of this country's best Supercross riders, we're looking forward to a bumper event in October."
Motorcycling Australia Chief Executive David White added that the motorcycle industry is excited to combine the world's premier circuit riders with Australia's best Supercross racers in one location.
White stated "we are delighted to be able to showcase the best Supercross riders in the country at such a prestigious international event."
"I'm sure that fans attending the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix will jump at the opportunity to see this great championship up-close for the first time."
