Victorian Government backs a more active State
Eight projects worth $635,000 aimed at encouraging more women to be involved in sport and a new grants program to support the work of Victoria's state sporting associations have been unveiled as part of the Victorian Government's plan to encourage more people to get more active, more often.
Speaking at a strategic planning forum attended by more than 150 recreation and sport sector representatives, Victorian Minister for Sport and Recreation Hugh Delahunty announced the two initiatives and set the scene for the future of community sport in Victoria.
Minister Delahunty stated "since becoming Minister, I have made it very clear that my key objective is to increase participation of Victorians in sport and recreation, whether as players, coaches, volunteers or administrators.
"Victoria's key state sporting stakeholders are central to helping us achieve this goal, and that's why the government is determined to work with the Victorian sporting industry to support a wider range of initiatives.
"(This) forum, combined with the funding support I am announcing, represents a new, more strategic approach that will ensure we have a shared vision in our pursuit of a more active Victoria."
Applications by State sporting associations are now open for the Victorians More Active Program, which aims to support activities linked to the four key sport development pillars of participation, membership, coaches/officials and club capacity.
In addition, eight projects that deliver opportunities for more women to get involved in all aspects of sport and recreation including playing, coaching and leadership roles, will share in $635,000 from the Women in Sport and Recreation Program. The projects include initiatives in the sports of cycling, touch football, football, gymnastics, motorcycling, softball, AFL and canoeing.
Minister Delahunty said the projects struck an important balance between getting more Victorians active and ensuring the sustainability of the sector.
