South Australian Off Road Motorcycling Strategy and Facilities Master Plan

Motorcycling SA has commenced the development of the South Australian Off Road Motorcycling Strategy and Facilities Master Plan.

Motorcycling SA (MSA) General Manager Michael Tucker explains that "the plan will guide the future provision and management of legal off road motorcycle facilities and develop appropriate management strategies for the sport."

A Master Plan is required for off road motorcycle riding as it's a growing sport with very limited access to legal facilities. This results in illegal riding in forests, native bushland, beaches, public land, reserves and roadside verges.

Off road motorcycling is also becoming increasing popular. In the last five years off road motorcycle sales have been strong, exceeding 2,500 bike sales per annum in South Australia. There are currently over 7,000 riders licensed through MSA and many more people participate in off road motorcycling informally.

The community has raised valid concerns around the use of off road motorcycles including noise and negative environmental impacts.

Tucker adds "we believe many of these issues are created from not having legitimate off road areas for riders."

The aim of the plan is to identify areas where riders can legitimately and safely ride as well as reduce the negative impacts of the activity.

The plan is being supported by the Office for Recreation and Sport, Motorcycling SA, Motor Trade Association and Murray-Darling Basin Natural Resource Management Board.

The survey closes on 30th May 2011 with the Plan expected to be completed in late 2011.

People wanting to participate in the process can complete the online survey at www.motorcyclingsa.org.au
