Singapore reports record year for tourism

Singapore's tourism industry has posted record highs for the second time in two years in both tourism receipts and visitor arrivals for 2017.

Tourism receipts rose by 3.9% to S$26.8 billion last year, due primarily to growth in visitor arrivals across all top 10 markets and higher visitor arrivals from high-spending markets such as China, South Korea, the USA and United Kingdeom. Visitor arrivals increased by 6.2% to 17.4 million, with 13 of the top 15 markets showing growth.

From January to September 2017, tourism receipts grew strongly across most of Singapore’s top 10 markets. For the first three quarters of 2017, the MICE industry grew by 4% to S$3.15 billion compared to the same period in 2016. This was due to MICE visitors spending more, which helped to offset the dip of 5% in MICE visitor arrivals to 1.75 million.

Welcoming the results, Singapore Tourism Board Chief Executive Lionel Yeo stated “the combined efforts of STB and our industry partners yielded strong results, against a context of better-than-expected global economic recovery, continued growth in Asia-Pacific travel and increased flight and cruise connectivity to Singapore..

“Together with significant initiatives to support industry innovation and competitiveness, we made excellent progress in 2017 towards our vision of quality tourism growth.”
