Sydney to host 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final as Tournament schedule revealed

World football governing body FIFA has today revealed the schedule for the 2023 Women’s World Cup with Auckland’s Eden Park to stage the tournament’s opening game and Sydney’s Accor Stadium confirmed as the venue for the tournament’s final.

Nine hosts cities - Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide in Australia and Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin and Hamilton in New Zealand and 10 venues will host fixtures for the tournament which runs from 23rd July to 20th August 2023.

Australia will host 35 games and New Zealand 29 - with venues to lose their naming rights for the duration of the event.

The new Sydney Football Stadium will be the venue for six group games with Sydney’s Stadium Australia (Accor Stadium) hosting a round of 16 game, quarter-final, semi-final and final.

Other group games in Australia will be staged in Brisbane (five), Melbourne (four) and Adelaide (four). New Zealand’s group games will held in Auckland (six), Wellington (seven), Dunedin (six) and Hamilton (five).

Brisbane will also host a quarter-final and also the playoff for third spot - other quarter-final host cities are Sydney, Wellington and Auckland.

Auckland’s Eden Park and Sydney’s Stadium Australia will be the semi-final venues.

Welcoming Eden Park’s hosting of nine matches, Eden Park Trust Chief Executive, Nick Sautner stated “this is an incredible opportunity for Eden Park and Aotearoa to showcase football’s elite and create unforgettable memories

“The eyes of the world will again be on the Park as we open the single biggest sporting event ever held In New Zealand.”

With Eden Park being New Zealand’s only venue with a capacity of more than 50,000, Sautner added “Eden Park and Tāmaki Makaurau’s selection only highlights the mana that our stadium holds on the world stage. We are committed to delivering an event that not only offers an outstanding fan experience but also creates a genuine legacy as we strive for gender equality in sport.”

“Our venue is a globally recognised stadium which remains a strategic asset for the country and community asset for Auckland. We now have a key role to play in the rejuvenation of the events industry following a challenging period of COVID lockdowns.”

FIFA will stage its draw for the tournament at yet to be released date where groups and match pairings, along with kick-off times, will be confirmed.
