Seoul's Lotte World Mall reimagined as flexible cultural space

The Lotte World Mall in the South Korean capital of Seoul is being rebuilt as a multi-use cultural place, with the addition of an the aquarium, cinemas and concert hall.

The giant shopping mall, one of Seoul’s largest, expects that an additional 20,000 visitors every day to attend movies in the new 4,600 seat, 21-screen cinema and an additional 4,000 visitors to view its aquarium.

The Superflex G cinema also includes the world’s cinema screen, measuring 34 x 14 metres – dimensions listed by the Guinness Book of World Records.

The aquarium provides various experiences such as feeding coy fish and presentations on white whales, beluga, penguins, and sea lions. It has about 650 species and the country’s longest underwater tunnel, it said.

Lotte World Mall is also building a 2,036 seat concert hall, expected to open in 2016, and is establishing the Lotte cultural foundation, investing over 16 billion won (US$14.6 million) annually for classical music.

Lotte is investing 120 billion won (US$109 million) in the concert hall which will have 2,036 seats and will be South Korea’s first orchestra-specialised hall with a 5,000 pipe pipe organ.
