SEC's Steve Romer named VMA 'Professional of the Year'
Sydney Entertainment Centre (SEC) General Manager Steve Romer has been named VMA Professional of the Year (Active member) by the Venue Management Association (VMA).
The Award, which celebrates and acknowledges a venue industry professional for their unsurpassed excellence and service to the industry, was presented at this week's annual VMA Congress Gala Dinner held at the RACV Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast.
Presenting the Award, VMA President, Brian Morris gave recognition to Steve's achievements, stating "this is a well-deserved recognition of hard work that Steve has put into developing the Venue Management Association as a Councillor and as President, as well as the impact he has had on the Industry over the years."
With an extensive knowledge spanning more than 28 years across both the leisure and corporate business markets, Romer has built his varied venue management experience across the tourism, entertainment and event planning sectors.
Romer has been a long term member of the VMA, serving as the VMA's President and board Director at the International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM) from 2008 to 2011, while also holding a position on the IAVM's international steering committee. During his time as VMA President, Steve oversaw the management, administration and continuity of the VMA/IAVM Affiliation Agreement and coordinated the re-invention of the VMA leadership team which also saw the relocation of new office space and facilities in Brisbane CBD.
At the Sydney Entertainment Centre, Steve has been responsible for the building's planning and delivery of its live music concerts, sports, family shows and other live events since mid 2009.
Further hallmarks to his illustrious career include Director of Operations at Sydney's Convention and Exhibition Centre for six years, and two years as Chief Executive of the Blacktown International Sports Park as Chief Executive.
Prior to his management positions in Sydney NSW, Steve based himself in Queensland where he headed up Dreamworld as Director of Operations and prior to that carried the title of Show and Entertainment Manager at Sea World.
Commenting on his receipt of the prestigious VMA award Steve commented,"I'm so proud and honoured to have received the recognition from the VMA. I love this industry that I'm in, and am truly amazed to win an award for something that I am just so enthusiastic about and simply love doing."
