Seating capacity to be boosted for Darwin Convention Centre

The Northern Territory Government is allocating $19.2 million in Budget 2024 to expand the capacity of the Darwin Convention Centre by 4,350 seats, to a total of 5,550 seats.

The upgrades will ensure that Darwin can host more major events, particularly those that have seating requirements beyond current capacity. This investment is great for tourism and it will strengthen the appeal of the Darwin Waterfront to locals and visitors alike.

The upgrades will also include upgrades to public amenities, audio and visual equipment too.

Budget 2024 also includes $41 million for NT Major Events, with a $4 million boost to continue to deliver world class major events and attract new events to add to the already packed Territory calendar.

The NT Government is upgrading the Waterfront and has recently signed a development agreement with Singapore hotel developers CEL to deliver the Darwin Convention Centre hotel.

The 236 bed hotel is a key part of the Masterplan to redevelop the Waterfront in one of Australia’s leading integrated lifestyle and tourism destinations.

The NT Government is backing tourism with $68 million in the Budget, including $6 million to talk up the Territory to its biggest visitor markets.

NT Chief Minister, Eva Lawler notes “the $19.2 million investment into expanding the Darwin Convention Centre will deliver flow on benefits far and wide.”
