Search and rescue training exercise conducted at Cairns natural attraction
Queensland Fire and Rescue swift water operators recently conducted a search and rescue operation during a training exercise at Cairn’s Babinda Boulders to promote community safety and awareness of hazards associated with creeks and watercourses in the tropics.
Surrounded by lush rainforest, the Babinda Boulders is an iconic attraction and popular swimming hole and tourist attraction south of Cairns.
The exercise was designed to provide opportunities for leading response agencies to test and refine response procedures and increase emergency services knowledge and operational capability at the Boulders.
Division 1 Councillor Brett Moller said it was a timely reminder for the public to be safe while exploring the region, particularly around creeks and waterfalls.
“We want everyone to get out and explore our backyard, but do it safely and sensibly,” Moller said.
“People have to respect and appreciate the potential dangers at our waterholes, and for their own safety, they need to obey signage when visiting these destinations.”
