Sapphire Coast Aquatic Project Moves Forward
The Sapphire Aquatic Centre continues to move at a rapid rate towards an anticipated opening in late spring 2010.
Consruction has advanced in recent months with concreting of the pool surrounds completed, the roof in place, and a ramp has been concreted from the administration area to the current amenities block - which is to be converted into a gym and a meetings room. Water toys will be installed shortly in the children's splash park area.
A unique development, with fundraising project driven by a passionate local community, recent funding from an engraved paver project has been remarkably successful, with close to $17,000 being raised towards construction costs, the pavers set to be a major feature in the entrance path into the new aquatic centre.
Woolworths has demonstrated its generosity and support by providing $3,000 towards a giant inflatable water toy, to feature at children's birthday parties at the centre, and on other special occasions.
Appointments at the centre have begun with Nicholas Pawley taking up the position of Manager of the Sapphire Aquatic Centre Project.
Speaking of Pawley's appointment, Garry Hetherington, President of the Pambula Aquatic Centre Inc Committee (PACI) stated "initially Nick will be employed by our existing organisation PAC Inc, the entity which fundraised, designed and built the Sapphire Aquatic Centre.
"When an agreement is formalised with the Bega Valley Shire Council, it is proposed we have created to run the facility. The new companyâs name is Sapphire Aquatic Ltd."
Pawley brings with him a wealth of experience, having worked in a managerial capacity at Lane Cove Leisure Centre, Bexley Swim Complex, Lake Talbott Swim Complex and the Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre.
Explaining the ongoing development of the Centre, Pawley commented "a facility like the Sapphire Aquatic Centre has the potential to provide the Sapphire Coast community with a variety of activities and programs, and that is one of my key focus points - activities like learn-to-swim, squads, aqua aerobics, warm water exercise, birthday parties, general lap swimming and much, much more.
"I am a great supporter of swimming clubs and other sporting groups, and am looking forward to working closely with all clubs in the Bega Valley Shire and beyond."
