Rock Up Netball offers social and healthy sport participation
Netball Victoria's recently launched Rock Up Netball (RUN) initiative is encouraging female participation in sport by offering a new way to play netball.
Developed by Netball Victoria in conjunction with VicHealth, the program is tailored to meet the different fitness and skill levels of women aged 15 years and over, based on a flexible ‘pay as you play’ option.
Launched at 15 pilot locations in both metropolitan and regional Victoria in August last year, Rock Up Netball is now available at locations across the State
Netball Victoria Participation Development Manager Scarlett O’Sullivan stated “Netball Victoria is excited to bring this new initiative to life with the support of VicHealth.
“We understand there are a lot of people in the community who are wanting to play sport in a social, relaxed environment and we believe that Rock Up Netball will help meet their needs.”
A VicHealth report published in October 2014 showed that more than two-thirds of adult Australian females were classified as being sedentary or having low levels of exercise.
To facilitate the barriers that stop women from participating in physical activity, RUN offers non-traditional netball activities and ensures a safe and inclusive environment where women can get together with friends and exercise at a pace that suits them.
In the same VicHealth report, evidence showed that four times as many Victorian women (44%) were choosing to participate in non-organised physical activity compared to organised physical activity (9%).
RUN offers 4 different programs:
Train - Incorporates the basic skills of playing netball in a fun and friendly environment with relaxed match play to finish. If you’re new to the sport or returning to netball, this is the program for you
Just Play - Rock Up at an allocated time, either by yourself or with friends to play a fame in a flexible, non-competitive environment. Scores will not be kept and positions can be changed as you go
Netacise - Netacise is a unique, netball inspired, group fitness activity to play a game in a flexibility, adaptability and enjoyment. It is open to all ages, all abilities and fitness levels regardless of whether or not you’ve played netball before
Social competition - Mixed and ladies competitions are offered to those who want to play netball in a social, friendly environment. Keeping in line with the games more traditional format, participants will have a more structured experience.
The Wendouree Netball Association in Ballarat is the one of the latest organisations to join UN, offering a four week pilot program of Train from starting Wednesday 1st June to Wednesday 22nd June.
The free program is run by community coaches and located at the Wendouree Netball Association.
