Raging Thunder launches rainforest adventure

Cairns adventure tourism operator Raging Thunder has launched a half-day canyoning experience in the tropical rainforest where guests can abseil, zip line, slide and jump beside the waterfalls and pools of Crystal Canyon.

Located just a 25-minute drive from Cairns city, the new Cairns Canyoning tour is suitable for beginners, including non-swimmers, aged between eight and 80, as well as those who have done canyoning before.

Introducing the experience, Raging Thunder Adventures Director of Sales Peta Zietsch commented “the excitement of canyoning in a rocky watercourse can be enjoyed in a safe and controlled environment with a maximum of 12 people under the supervision of two experienced guides who carry all the heavy equipment..

“The rainforest adventure takes you beyond the public access areas of Crystal Cascades for an 11m controlled descent beside a warm tropical waterfall.

“Cool off at the bottom in the slide before the challenge of the biggest drop of the day, a 30m abseil down Big Cheese.

“The course continues with a total of eight rappels, three jumps, two slides and a very cool zip line, all with the bonus of hand lines to sure you are extra safe while having fun.

“Crystal Canyon is in the tropical rainforest so it is one of the few places in the world where you can go canyoning year-round without the restriction of a heavy wetsuit.

“Protective safety gear including a canyoning harness, helmet, shoes, long-sleeve thermal top for sun protection, neoprene shorts and a low-profile life jacket are all padded to provide extra protection from the rocks.”

Barry Goes, who has designed and operated canyoning courses in New Zealand and Switzerland, helped design the course.

Goes added “this course is world class with an added advantage of being in warm rainforest waters, as opposed to freezing snow melt waters, and close to a recognised tourism destination with an international airport.”

The Crystal Canyoning guides have white water river guide, first aid and swift water rescue qualifications. Chinese, Korean and Japanese guides are available on request.

Cairns Canyoning at Crystal Canyon is $169 per person including return transfers, all training, equipment and a light lunch.
