Hong Kong Disneyland Suspends Expansion
Hong Kong Disneyland has halted all creative and design work on the expansion of its theme park on Lantau Island. The news comes after talks with the Hong Kong Government about the financing of the new project failed to reach a conclusion.
According to Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Executive Vice President for Public Affairs Leslie Goodman, two years of extensive negotiations "have not yet reached a final agreement," adding that "the uncertainty of the outcome requires us to immediately suspend all creative and design work on the project."
The 128-hectare Hong Kong Disneyland opened in 2005 and includes 2,100 hotel rooms and a 28,000 metre2 retail, dining and entertainment complex. While having attracted more than 15 million visitors since its opening these numbers have been below expected target number.
