Plans for new luxury hotel on Lindeman Island
The Queensland Government is to contribute to the planned redevelopment of the Lindeman Island resort under its Growing Future Tourism Fund.
The former Club Med on the most southerly of the Whitsundays island group has been empty since the French resort company closed the property in 2012 after the devastation of ex-Tropical Cyclone Yasi in 2011.
After a series of false starts, the 136-hectare property was purchased by Singapore-based Well Smart Investment Holdings in April last year, with the new owners resurrecting a $583 million plan to redevelop the resort proposed by the Chinese owned White Horse Group.
While the full redevelopment will include the refurbishment of a 210-room, five-star hotel with a restaurant, bar, pool, spa and gymnasium, 100-person event space, restaurant and bar, nine-hole golf course and staff accommodation, funding for stage one works including a 50 metre jetty.
Introducing the plan, Well Smart Group Director, Tony Jia told Brisbane’s The Courier-Mail “we believe this grant is a great boost in confidence and will become a pivotal step towards the makeover of Lindeman Island resort.
“Club Med Lindeman Island was once an iconic destination for Australia but has been abandoned since 2012, it is very unfortunate to witness such a stunning island getting forgotten.
“The grant marks the beginning of an exciting journey, and we will proudly announce that Lindeman Island will become a beacon of sustainable development.”
