Diving returns to Great Barrier Reef’s Fitzroy Island

Island diving has returned to Fitzroy Island Resort in Tropical North Queensland with the opening of the Fitzroy Island Sports Hub (FISH) and its dedicated dive pool.

Advising that introductory and refresher diving with easy access from the island into the water were just some of the many activities on offer to guests as part of the Great Barrier Reef Resort’s expanded tour and activity timetable, Fitzroy Island Resort General Manager, Sheena Matthews commented “Discover Scuba Diving and a Refresher Dive update can be undertaken with Dive Master Jeff Jones or one of our experienced team, and divers can hire the equipment they need from FISH for both guided and self-guided dives with tank refills available daily.

“Our glass-bottom boat has been refurbished to take divers to stunning fringing reef sites that are sheltered by the island providing optimum dive conditions.

“At the aptly-named Spot X you will find Nemo and the colourful nudibranch while diving among the soft and hard corals.

“Fitzroy island Resort is continuing to expand dive options for guests with residential dive courses beginning in November.

“These will take advantage of the range of accommodation available including camping with the Resort’s tent kit, a Resort Studio room, or a contemporary Island Suite overlooking the Coral Sea.

“Lessons will be conducted in a classroom with rainforest views on one side and Welcome Bay on the other, and in the purpose-built dive pool before diving the continental island’s fringing reefs.

“We will be introducing exciting Bubblemaker Scuba options for our younger guests aged 8-12 years and night dives for experienced divers to see the nocturnal reef life in coming months.

“Snorkellers can also visit sites like Shark Fin Bay on a Snorkelling Safari from the glass-bottom boat or novices can do a beginner’s tour where they learn to snorkel comfortably in front of the Resort where turtles gather to feed.”

Other tours available at FISH include a SUP or kayak guided tour, the Glass Bottom Boat Tour, the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre Tour, and the Junior Marine Biologist Program.

Rainforest-clad Fitzroy Island is just a 45-minute boat ride from Cairns city and is home to the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre and the Great Barrier Reef’s first ocean-based coral nursery.
