Perth’s Adventure World and Cockburn Ice Arena impacted by local bushfire
A bushfire in Bibra Lake, south of Perth that threatened homes and was first reported just after 2.30pm today, prompted authorities to urge people in the Cockburn Ice Arena and theme park Adventure World to shelter in place when it was upgraded to an emergency warning.
However, while some media were reporting that Adventure World was at risk of being destroyed, this was not the case as efforts by Emergency services with their water bombing planes and helicopters along with fire fighters on the ground saw the warning downgraded to a watch and act alert at 5:35pm.
Adventure World was closed but the ice rink was open, as locals headed to the centre to keep cool in the 38 degree Celsius heat.
Southern parts of Western Australia faced extreme bushfire conditions today, with more than 25 schools and six national parks closed as emergency crews braced for windy and hot conditions.
Western Australian Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) Commissioner Darren Klemm said today's conditions were the worst the state has seen in two years with 61 local government areas in the South West under the strictest fire danger ratings in the state in nearly a decade, with a total fire ban expected.
