Paralympian John Domandl to make keynote address at active-net Australasia

Paralympian John Domandl is to be the keynote speaker at the upcoming active-net Australasia event.

Aged 55, the vision-impaired triathlete, ironman, marathon runner and adventurer has finished more 100 triathlons, five marathons, and one 24-hour ultramarathon. He is the first legally blind person in the world to complete an ultraman triathlon (10 kilometre swim, 420 kilometre bike and 84 kilometre double marathon) and is the world’s only person to complete all triathlon distances (from sprint to ironman) as a sighted person and a legally blind person.

Commenting on his challenges and achievements, Domandl explains "I have a condition called retinitis pigmentosis, it’s the deterioration of the retina.

“There is about 10,000-15,000 people in Australia with the condition and most people lose their sight by the time they are 30 or 35. I still have about 15% left and I put that down to the healthy, active and positive lifestyle I lead."

Domandl, who represented Australia at the Seoul Paralympics in 1988, has owned Eleebana Fitness on Lake Macquarie in NSW, a private personal training studio, for more than 15 years.

In 2015 he was the winner of the Fitness Australia ‘Active Achiever Award’, in 2010 won Australian Fitness Network’s ‘Inspiration Of The Year’ award and in 2003 was the winner of Fitness New South Wales’ ‘Fitness Professional Of The Year’.

During active-net Domandl will share his light-hearted experiences of ‘what sport and fitness has done for me’ and help delegates understand some of the difficulties and challenges he has faced as a legally blind person in the sporting world.

Mike Hill, Director of Leisure-net Solutions, the leading customer insight provider for the UK active leisure sector and organiser of the active-net event is looking forward to Domandl’s address, commenting “when I heard John’s acceptance speech for his Fitness Australia ‘Active Achiever Award’ I knew he would be an ideal speaker for active-net Australasia.

“He is a truly inspirational individual and will provide valuable stimulation to the sector on what we can achieve.”

Leisure-net run the only business to business networking event for the active-leisure sector in Australia. active-net 2016 will bring together 100 leading operators and suppliers for business-focused networking and one-to-one face-to-face pre-arranged meetings.
