Palmerston's $180,000 Dunny

Palmerston City Council has opened a new Exeloo toilet by the Sanctuary Lakes' playground in the suburb of Gunn.

The $180,000 Exeloo III, model 01, is self-cleaning, can play music, and tells people how long they've got before it automatically opens the doors.

Palmerston Mayor Rob Macleod said the super dunny had a 10-minute limit per customer, to stop "inappropriate behaviour".

The Northern Territory of Tennant Creek installed its first Exeloo, imported from New Zealand, last month.

The Tennant & District Times reported their dunny scored more than 1,000 'uses' in its first three days.

The statistics prompted Editor Jasmin Afianos to publicly muse on how locals and visitors had been relieving themselves for the previous two decades.

Alice Springs also has an Exeloo - a Twin-Orbit model adjacent to the Todd Street Mall, which is remotely monitored by an office in Sydney.

It plays the town song while in use.

Alice Springs Town Council Media Officer Claire Ashard believes their Exeloo is the most frequented Exeloo in Australia.

Mayor Macleod says the Council is very happy with its latest dunny, stating that it "will be a great addition to one of our most visited parks.

"We are a very young community and young families can now safely access a public toilet at our popular park."

The Northern Territory Government contributed $110,000 to the cost of the toilet.
