Abu Dhabi Science Centre to open in 2016
Set to open in 2016, the Abu Dhabi Science Centre expects to draw more than 200,000 visitors a year while generating interest in science among Emirati youth.
Backed by Abu Dhabi’s Technology Development Committee (TDC), the Centre will offer more than 200 interactive exhibits in an effort to get more young children interested in science.
The TDC has been working on the concept since 2010, with help from The Exploratorium in San Francisco.
Introducing the concept of the Centre, TDC Director General Ahmed Al Calily explains “our main objective is to support the development of science and technology within Abu Dhabi, serving our economic aspirations of developing a knowledge-based economy.
“But also on the societal front, it’s important to engage society with science and technology because that will also help with the development of society at large.”
Located next to Abu Dhabi International Airport, the two-storey centre, covering 6,500 metres2, will features a planetarium, water play area and seven signature galleries for exhibitions as well as teaching spaces.
The Centre will serve as both a local project for education, as well as a major attraction for the people of the United Arab Emirates and visitors worldwide. Targeted for youth aged between six and 11 years, the Centre is part of plans by the TDC to “establish a vibrant Science, Technology and Innovation base in the Emirate."
