Optus Stadium project named world’s best at global awards
Perth’s Optus Stadium has secured a remarkable 27th accolade since opening in January being named Project of the Year at 2018 TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Awards.
The Award, presented at TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Summit 2018 in London last month, recognised Optus Stadium for excellence in a new stadium build or expansion.
Optus Stadium beat stiff competition from the USA and Malaysia in the category, including Kuala Lumpur Sports City, Malaysia; Fiserv Forum, Milwaukee, USA; Little Caesars Arena, Detroit, USA; Louis Armstrong Arena, New York, USA; Audi Field, Washington DC, USA and SunTrust Park, Atlanta, , USA.
The award is Optus Stadium's 27th for the year having previously won state, national and international awards for tourism, architecture, catering, landscaping, design, building and construction.
Western Australia’s Agent General Mike Deeks attended the event and accepted the award on behalf of the Western Australian Government.
Launched in 2010, TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Awards are the first industry awards nominated by the stadium sector and recognise leadership, innovation and achievement in the design, development and construction of major sports facilities.
Welcoming the Award, Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray stated “the State Government and VenuesLive have overseen an incredibly successful commissioning and first year of operations at Optus Stadium.
"Being awarded the world's best in these awards reflects the hard work undertaken by everyone involved in Optus Stadium's first year of operations.
"This award confirms Optus Stadium's status as a truly world-class venue, and one all Western Australians can be proud of."
Among the four winners at the TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Awards, the Melbourne Cricket Ground received the Innovation Award for its Organics Dehydrator.
TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Awards are separate to the TheStadiumBusiness Awards. Both are presented by UK-based Xperiology.
