NSW Government backs Supercars return to Sydney Motorsport Park

Sydney will return as a Supercars race host in 2020 following the signing of a $33 million investment package by the NSW Government.

Sydney Motorsport Park in the city's west last hosted a popular night event in 2018, but the circuit was left off the 2019 schedule when it was replaced by Perth.

Now with the construction of 150 permanent light towers around the circuit being backed by the NSW Government investment, capable of producing ‘broadcast quality’ lighting, the event will return at an, as yet, unspecified date.

Saturday's announcement comes after Supercars Chief Executive Sean Seamer said the 2020 calendar could include a 'summer series', with the new schedule set to be released in June.

The Sydney circuit precinct will also include the establishment of Australia's only Motor Sports Centre of Excellence, as well as upgrades to the adjacent Sydney Dragway.

Announcing the funding, NSW Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres stated “motorsport is the fourth most watched sport in the country and thousands of people in Western Sydney love it, which is why we want to ensure the sport has a strong presence in Western Sydney in the future.”

Seamer also suggested the upgrades to the precinct could encourage teams to set up their base in Sydney, which would also provide potential education and training opportunities.

He advised “the 2018 night race was a fantastic proof of concept... we look forward to the SuperNight format returning in 2020 and moving on to the second phase of our partnership with the ARDC and NSW Government, which is to establish a Supercars team in Sydney, based at SMSP.

"This also provides the catalyst to link Supercars' technology, education and training with Western Sydney's strong tertiary education and engineering communities.

"A Sydney-based team will also have the growing greater Western Sydney community as a support base given the huge number of Supercars fans in the western corridor of Australia's largest city."
