Northern Territory backs Parks Week 2013

The Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory is encouraging Territorians to get healthy by nature and take part in this year's Parks Week.

Parks Week is an annual celebration across Australia and New Zealand recognising the role our parks play in contributing to the social, cultural and environmental health of our communities.

Park Operations Director Neva McCartney has invited the community to celebrate Parks Week at a variety of events planned across the Territory.

She explains "In Darwin we are hosting an array of events including a bird watching walk at Holmes Jungle and a guided bike ride at Lee Point on Saturday 2nd March.

"Alice Springs Park Rangers are also offering a variety of walks and bike rides and will host a BBQ with the 'Friends of Larapinta' at Simpsons Gap on Friday 8th March.

"And Katherine Park Ranger, Clare Pearce has organised a rock hole rambling tour in conjunction with Nitmiluk Tours, at Nitmiluk National Park in Katherine on Saturday the 2nd of March.

"Many of these events are a real community effort, being hosted in partnership with groups who regularly use our Parks such as Life Be In It, Top End Orienteers, Field Naturalist Society of NT and Savannah Guides Limited, as well those who we work with closely such as Nitmiluk Tours.

"The Territory Wildlife Park and the Alice Springs Desert Park are also celebrating Parks Week with a variety of events and activities planned throughout the week (and) we are also encouraging the public to check out the Parks and Wildlife Facebook page for our 'ranger's top tips' on ways to celebrate parks week in your own time."

Parks Week is organised by Parks Forum and runs from 2nd to 8th March 2013 with the theme 'Parks Week 2013: Get Healthy by Nature'.
