New veterinary hospital opens at Werribee Open Range Zoo

Victoria's Werribee Open Range Zoo has opened a new $2.1 million veterinary hospital.
The state-of-the-art 300 metres2 facility is 10 times larger than the old hospital and features wide viewing windows that allow visitors an unprecedented vantage point from which to watch some of the life-saving surgery that keeps the zoo's animals healthy and happy.
The new hospital is vital to Werribee Open Range Zoo's plans to expand its animal collection ahead of the arrival of three male gorillas later in the year.
Zoo Director Sally Lewis explains "without these new veterinary facilities, we would not be able to substantially grow our animal collection and tap into the enormous potential of this relatively young zoo.
"It also means the veterinary team will perform fewer field procedures and operate in a more sterile environment, which will enhance the safety of the animals and relieve pressure on vet staff."
The new hospital boasts three surgical and post-mortem tables, three wards for short-term care and separate ventilation zones ensuring sterility for surgery and avoiding contamination.
Lewis adds that "this hospital is a world-class facility that will provide a crucial building for the zoo's future."
