New screens to light up Melbourne’s Federation Square

Federation Square is set to become an outdoor digital art gallery with the announcement that a set of state-of-the-art digital experience screens will adorn the exterior of the Melbourne landmark’s Transport building.

The wall of LED screens will be complemented by the addition of mobile interactive screens at various locations around the Square, while improvements to the precinct’s free Wi-Fi are also planned.

The screens will replace the current big screen, giving locals and visitors at the Square a better viewing experience for the big arts, sports and cultural events.

Once complete, the new screens will feature a full schedule of programs - including works by students, cultural groups and local artists.

A temporary live stage and screen will be erected during construction to ensure the summer events program can continue, which includes Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Federation Square is a key part of why Victoria is the tourism and major events capital of Australia. The Square has welcomed more than 100 million visitors since opening in 2002.

Commenting on the planned installations, Victorian Minister for Tourism and Major Events John Eren stated “these state-of-the-art new screens will make Federation Square an even better place to get together and celebrate right in the heart of Melbourne.”

“It’s one of our top attractions for locals and visitors, and a wonderful place to enjoy a meal, watch a big sporting or cultural event or simply take in the sights and sounds of the world’s most liveable city.”

Construction will begin in October.
