New Rockdale City Aquatic Centre moves forward
The development of the planned new Rockdale City Aquatic Centre is advancing, with plans and designs agreed and a Development Application now lodged for the new facility.
To be built on the site of the old Bexley Swimming Centre, Rockdale City Council currently has its Development Application on public exhibition until 13th March.
Development of the new aquatic centre has come about as a result of years of community action and lobbying.
Planned and designed by Brewster Hjorth Architects, when it opens in 2016 the new facility will feature:
• A new outdoor 50 metre competition pool with a 600 seat grandstand and shade structure;
• An indoor recreation/children's play pool;
• An indoor eight lane 25 metre lap pool;
• An indoor program pool (warm water exercise/learn to swim);
• Spa, sauna and steam room;
• Creche;
• Community space;
• 700 metre2 gymnasium and fitness area;
• Kiosk;
• Change rooms and amenities;
• Administrative rooms;
• Plant room.
The facility has also been welcomed by Sydney's waterpolo community, with the outdoor 50-metre pool to be constructed according to FINA specifications allowing for men and women's international water polo.
Welcoming the development, Water Polo Australia Chief Executive Chris Harrison stated "this is a fantastic result for the community and it is great that the new development will cater for another user group in water polo.
"For the water polo community it will be of great benefit to both our beginners and current elite players."
