New multi-sport facility to boost grassroots sport in Kalbarri

Grassroots sport in the Western Australian town of Kalbarri is set to be enhanced with the opening of a new multi-sport facility for tennis, netball and basketball.

The new complex, which includes social rooms and change rooms, is located in the centre of Kalbarri and provides a much-needed replacement to deteriorated facilities.

The $668,000 project also includes new cricket practice nets and a tennis hit-up wall.

Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray visited Kalbarri on Saturday (2nd September) to open the new four-court facility.

Funding of the project was backed by the Western Australian Government, contributed $225,000 in funding from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries' Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund, and $184,190 from the Royalties for Regions program.

Speaking at the opening, Minister Murray stated “quality sporting facilities are important to create active and engaged communities, especially in regional centres where sport is so often the glue which binds a community together.

"These courts replace what was a tired, worn-out facility - and will offer a shot in the arm to local tennis, basketball and netball players.

"The courts are now right in the middle of town within easy walking distance and built next to a good facility that includes social rooms and change rooms which were previously under-utilised.”
