Western Australian Government commits $20 million to build skywalks in the Kalbarri National Park
Visitors will be able to walk and enjoy views 100 metres above the Murchison River Gorge after the Western Australian Government committed $20 million to build two skywalks at Kalbarri National Park.
The skywalks, to be funded by the Royalties for Regions program, will extend 12 and 20 metres beyond the gorge rim at the Inyaka Wookai Watju site (West Loop) and will also feature interpretation signs, shade shelters and caravan parking.
The skywalks will be accessible to people of all ages and abilities.
The funding will also complete sealing of the Loop/Z Bend Road and redevelop the Z Bend and Meanarra Hill tourist sites.
Announcing the funding, Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett said the skywalks' construction and road sealing recognised the region's growing tourism industry and would further support the region's economy.
Premier Barnett stated “tourism is a cornerstone of Kalbarri's economy and building quality cutting-edge infrastructure to increase visitor enjoyment and experience is essential in ensuring the region's growth.”
The new infrastructure is expected to encourage more people to stay longer and make multiple trips to the region.
Construction will begin next year and the skywalks are expected to be completed by 2017.
More than 370,000 people visited Kalbarri National Park last year.
