Western Australian Government backs new Esperance indoor sport arena
The long awaited redevelopment of the Esperance Indoor Sports Stadium is to go ahead thanks to a recently announced $4.06 million investment from the Western Australian Government’s Royalties for Regions program.
A combined Shire of Esperance and stakeholder contribution of $2.3 million, potential funding of $1 milllion from the Western Australian Government Department of Sport and Recreation’s Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund and $500,000 from Lotterywest will complete the funding required to build the new $7.8 million venue.
To be situated next to the current stadium with a covered walkway connecting the two buildings, the new multi-functional indoor sports and recreation centre will house three multi-purpose courts, meeting rooms, kitchen and kiosk facilities, change rooms and storage space for each user group.
Announcing the funding, Western Australian Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said it was important regional communities had similar access to sporting and recreation facilities as those in the metropolitan area, stating “this new centre will help ensure residents of Esperance and surrounding areas can maintain an active lifestyle, which has flow-on effects for health and quality of life of the community.
"The new sports stadium will provide competition-standard facilities that will enable Esperance to host elite sporting teams and events and increase the number and diversity of sports and sporting groups located at the stadium."
The new facility will have the capacity and amenities to attract exhibition and regional roadshow-type events, concerts and festivals to Esperance, and provide additional peak-season accommodation.
Development will be broken into two stages. Stage 1 will provide three competition-standard indoor courts with room for a fourth court should future demand warrant it, a kiosk, kitchen and match day facilities, modern change-rooms and dedicated storage space.
Stage 2 will see the redevelopment of the current Noel White Pavilion to provide sports administration office space, community meeting rooms, a function room and additional storage space for facility users.
This project is part of the $198 million Goldfields Esperance Revitalisation Fund
Esperance sits on Western Australia’s Southern Ocean coastline approximately 720 kilometres east-south east of Perth.
