New members appointed to Football Australia’s Development Committee

Football Australia’s Development Committee plays a key role of contributing effectively to Football Australia’s strategic football development initiatives.

To strengthen the strategic vision for the ongoing growth and development of football in Australia, Football Australia has appointed three new members to its Football Development Committee (FDC).

Former Socceroo Cap #397 Mark Schwarzer OAM (pictured top left), Matilda Cap #89 Di Alagich (pictured top centre), and high-performance specialist Anthony Crea (pictured top right) have joined the FDC, bringing a wealth of experience, knowledge, and a deep understanding of the game to their new roles.

These appointments follow a structured process to identify individuals with unique skills and national team expertise.

They will join Football Australia Chief Executive James Johnson, Football Australia Board Member Sam Ciccarello, and Football Australia Board Member and former Matilda (Cap #108) Heather Garriock who already serve on the FDC. Together, this group brings a diverse set of perspectives and expertise, ensuring a well-rounded approach to the development of football across Australia.

Johnson added “as we continue to develop the game at all levels in Australia, the Football Development Committee plays a crucial role in advising Football Australia as it continues to drive key initiatives for both elite and grassroots football. The appointment of Di Alagich, Mark Schwarzer and Anthony Crea further enhances the expertise within the Committee, ensuring we are well-positioned to meet the evolving challenges and opportunities of football development in Australia.

Key Appointments

Mark Schwarzer OAM – One of Australia’s most decorated footballers, Mark Schwarzer has represented the Socceroos 109 times, playing in two FIFA World Cups and numerous other international tournaments. His extensive international playing experience will offer key insights into elite player development and national team strategy.

Di Alagich – A former Matilda with 86 caps and a pioneer in Australian women’s football, Di Alagich’s involvement in the game spans over a decade at the highest level. Her deep understanding of women’s football will be critical in shaping strategies for the continued growth and success of the women’s game in Australia.

Anthony Crea – With over 20 years of experience in high-performance and sports science, Anthony Crea has worked with national teams and A-League clubs to optimise player performance. His expertise will provide strategic guidance on high-performance structures and sports science methodologies.

The FDC serves as an ad hoc committee providing expert advice and recommendations on football development matters, supporting Football Australia’s broader strategic objectives. The committee is responsible for elite player development, community football, league structures, coaching, and national team culture and wellbeing.

The FDC operates under the guidance of the Football Australia Board, and members are appointed based on their specialised skills and experience in relevant areas. The appointments of co-opted members are subject to approval by the Board, with members serving a two-year term.
