New grants to encourage young people into Victorian parks

Victorian Minister for Environment and Climate Change and Minister for Youth Affairs Ryan Smith has announced the recipients of the Y Discover Youth Grants, a new program to encourage Victorians aged 12 to 25 to get involved with their local parks.
Minister Smith said the grants were an excellent way to commemorate International Youth Day and highlight young Victorians' passion for the environment.
He explained "the aim of the grants program is to develop innovative and creative programs which will provide opportunities for young people aged 12 to 25 to become more active and involved in our diverse parks.
"Getting involved with Victoria's parks is a great way for young people to foster a life-long love of the environment and to undertake practical action to improve our local environment.
"The Victorian Coalition Government is committed to providing the next generation of park friends and volunteers opportunities to get out in our parks and learn about their local environment."
Eight organisations will receive funding across the state under the new grants program, including arts and cultural programs, recreation and personal development programs, and skills development programs.
Minister Smith said the Y Discover Youth Grants is another example of the Coalition Government's vision for young people as outlined in its Youth Statement, 'Engage, Involve, Create', adding "we want to see more young people involved in their communities and decision-making, engaged in education, training and employment, and creating culture, communities and enterprise.
"These grants will result in some creative programs that encourage young people to see Victoria's magnificent parks estate as great venues and assets to enjoy and protect."
The Y Discover Youth Grants 2012 is a Coalition Government initiative delivered in partnership with the Youth Affairs Council of Victoria (YACVic).
