New Forum to explore inclusion and diversity in sport
A new sporting industry event is expecting to assemble invested people to share ideas, strategies, best practice and explore future approaches and solutions to help sport get inclusion and diversity right.
The 2016 Diversity & Inclusion in Sport Forum, to be held at the Jasper Hotel in Melbourne on Friday 7th October, will welcome in excess of 125 sports leaders and practitioners from a cross section of sport, government, academia and the community.
Confirmed speakers include: Kate Jenkins (Sex Discrimination Commissioner), Peter Downs (Director Play by the Rules), Ramon Spaaij (Victoria University), Tim Soutphommasane (Race Discrimination Commissioner), Julia Symons (General Manager Community, Netball Australia), Ellen Beale (General Manager Community for the NRL), Carmel Guerra (Chief Executive of the Centre for Multicultural Youth), Kerry Tavrou (Gymnastics Victoria), Lynne Anderson (Chief Executive of the Australian Paralympic Committee), Andrew Purchas (Pride in Sport Index), Michael Woods (Swimming Australia), Merrilee Barnes (Australian Sports Commission), Patty Kinnersly (Our Watch), Kelly Appleby (AFLPA) and others.
Topics to be addressed will include: gender equity, reconciliation action plans, homophobia, casual racism, disability and universal design, refugees and migrants, collective impact, junior sport, violence against women, social inclusion frameworks, social network analysis, Indigenous player welfare, transgender, inclusion strategy and program design.
The format is for the 16 invited speakers to talk across these topic areas in succinct, insightful 12 to 15 minute (TED X style) presentations. Each talk will be followed by questions and information sharing between the speakers and attendees.
The latest and best video and social media campaigns on these topics will also be shown in between talks.
The goal is for people to collectively share current practices and new ideas and approaches to greater equip the sporting industry to meet the many challenges and opportunities in this area. This is an event organised for the sports industry at cost (the event costs $100 only to attend) and is not a profit making exercise.
The forum is supported by the Centre for Multicultural Youth, Monash University, Victoria University, Australian Sports Commission, Play by the Rules, Oliver & Thompson Consultancy and Australian Human Rights Commission.
