New events centre planned for north Brisbane site

A joint venture between property developers the George Group and Pointcorp has revealed plans for a new convention and events centre as part of the Laguna lifestyle precinct.

Located in North Lakes, about 30 kilometres north of Brisbane, the venue will feature five inter-connected spaces with capacity for more than 700 delegates.

George Group Director Patrick George said the vision for the venue is to “redefine the perception of a typically impersonal and bland convention experience”.

George explained “rather than attending functions in insipid and often isolated buildings, this experience will be vibrant and stimulating as it will be part of a larger lively precinct.

“It will sit above a beautiful tree-lined high street with bustling curated retail and food and beverage outlets, and its terrace will overlook a community green space and lagoon-style pool.

“We envisage it will be used for everything from large-scale conventions, trade fairs and seminars, to cultural exhibitions, music concerts and local community events, right down to intimate private gatherings and celebrations such as weddings. We will counter-balance the commercial usage by actively encouraging the local community to utilise the spaces too. Like the broader Laguna precinct, it will be for everyone.”

The venue will include five inter-connected spaces with capacity for more than 700 delegates along with a 140-room hotel, bars, restaurants, a shopping precinct.

Ingrid Richards, Director of Richards and Spence, the architectural firm behind the project, said the group want to create a welcoming and relaxing experience for those attending the centre.

Richards stated “each space, will feature an adjoining articulated covered and landscaped terrace that can also be divided off accordingly to create intimate spaces where delegates can gather, relax, collaborate and unwind all year-round.

“The venue will have capacity to accommodate approximately 720 seated delegates in classic convention mode, with all the typical adjoining banquet kitchen, storage and other amenities required. The terrace will provide perfect breakout spaces. There will also be a roof terrace above the venue which will provide another space for external functions.”

Construction is planned to start in early 2018, with completion expected for late 2020.
