New Delhi to host badminton showpiece
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced that New Delhi will host the 2014 Thomas and Uber Cups, with the agreement marking the first time that India will stage the sport's oldest and most prestigious international competition.
The Thomas and Uber Cups are the world men's and women's team championships, with the Chinese city of Wuhan having staged the most recent edition in 2012. The 2014 competitions will be held in New Delhi from 18th to 25th May.
Announcing the hosting, BWF Deputy President Paisan Rangsikitpho stated "India are no strangers to hosting world-class badminton events having hosted the World Championships in 2009, the World Junior Championships in 2008 and the Commonwealth Games in 2010. This is also the third year India are hosting a leg of the BWF World Superseries. Badminton is also developing at a rapid pace in India with many players making their mark on the international stage and we are happy to award the hosting rights to India."
New Delhi's event will see the introduction of a strategic new format for the Thomas and Uber Cups, designed to strengthen global development and coverage of the sport. The revamp will centre around an expansion of the competition from 12 to 16 teams for the 2014 edition, with participants being determined on a world ranking basis.
