New beginning for The Genesian Theatre

A new chapter has begun for The Genesian Theatre with the recent opening of their first production at their newly built theatre in the Sydney suburb of Rozelle.

For a company that has produced many murder mysteries, it is only fitting that J.B. Priestley’s classic twist on the genre, ‘An Inspector Calls’ christens the Genesians’ new stage.

Genesian Theatre Company President Barry Nielsen noted “this is a momentous occasion for the Genesians. 'An Inspector Calls’ is the perfect choice to launch our incredible new theatre. It also ushers in a fresh era of renewed energy and creativity for us all. This is just the beginning of an extraordinary 2025 season for the Genesians and we welcome all in our new community to enjoy it with us.”

’An Inspector Calls’, directed by Mark Bull and Ali Bendall, veers from a typical ‘who done it’ to exploring the deeper question of ‘what did it’. A celebratory evening at the prosperous Birling family home is interrupted by the arrival of the mysterious Inspector Goole. Their peaceful dinner party is shattered by Inspector Goole’s investigations into the death of a young woman named Eva Smith. His startling revelations shake the very foundations of the family’s lives, expose uncomfortable truths and challenge us all to examine our consciences. J.B. Priestley critiques the selfishness and moral indifference of the upper class while urging audiences to reflect on their own responsibilities towards others.

Bull shares “I have always had a passion for theatre that makes you feel something. Themes from J.B. Priestley from 1940 are as relevant now as they were nearly 90 years ago when first performed in Moscow.

“As we move our community to our new home in Rozelle, we will need even more focus on the community that makes us who we are. I look forward to audiences having the opportunity to experience the new space and experience the amazing cast put forward in this classic show.”

This milestone production for the Genesian Theatre Company is a must-see for loyal patrons and newcomers alike.

’An Inspector Calls’ is playing until 22nd February at Genesian Theatre, St Joseph's Church Hall, 2B Gordon Street, Rozelle
