Genesian Theatre Company’s new theatre officially opens

The Genesian Theatre Company’s new theatre in Rozelle in Sydney’s inner west was declared open this past week - marking the beginning of a new chapter for not only the Genesians but the local community as well.

After saying a final goodbye to their ‘little theatre’ in Kent Street, the Genesians said an enthusiastic hello last Sunday to their new home in Rozelle. The purpose-built theatre space is situated within the St Joseph’s precinct in Gordon Street.

A comprehensive theatrical fit-out has transformed the precinct’s church hall into a 130-seat playhouse, complete with bar, foyer, backstage dressing rooms, as well as a state-of-the-art sound and lighting control booth. The theatre also features wheelchair and walker access.

A new asset to the inner west community, the theatre is perfectly positioned near the reopened White Bay Power Station, as well as the area’s many pubs and restaurants. It will be a place for all to enjoy productions, classes, workshops and other performances.

Genesian Theatre President, Barry Nielsen, acknowledged the enormous dedication and hard work that has seen the hope for a new home for the company turn into a reality. After a moving recital of the Actor’s Prayer, a cherished long-standing tradition before every Genesian performance, Bishop Danny Meagher performed a special blessing for the new space.

Inner West Council Mayor, Darcy Byrne, then officially declared the theatre open. Attendees were then treated to a special treat with an exclusive preview of the first ten minutes of An Inspector Calls, the company’s first production at their new home, which opens in January, 2025.
