New Arthurs Seat chairlift ready to soar
Visitors to Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula will soon be able to travel to Arthurs Seat by chairlift wih the newly named Arthurs Seat Eagle set to open on the weekend of 3rd and 4th December.
Featuring 24 fully enclosed gondolas, the new chairlift, built by Austrian company Doppelmayr, replaces the former gondola ride which ceased operating in 2006.
Commenting on the $14 million project, Arthurs Seat Eagle Chief Executive Hans Brugman told local media “the project is going swimmingly and we are on track for (a) 3rd December opening.”
Originally proposed by the Mornington Peninsula Shire Council, the project to rebuild the Arthurs Seat chairlift was taken over by the Victorian Government earlier this year.
Nonetheless, Mornington Shire Mayor Graham Pittock is looking forward to the opening, stating “it will obviously be an enormous boost for tourism in the region and for the town of Dromana, but the impact on the delicate nature of the state park will take time to evaluate.”
The Eagle, built by Austrian company Doppelmayr, starts at the same location as the old lift, at the bottom of Arthurs Seat Road, and largely follows the same ascent.
The former chairlift was closed and decommissioned in 2006 after a series of mishaps including the collapse of a pylon in 2003, an injury to an elderly woman whose carriage slid into another carriage in 2004, and the trapping of eight people after a mechanical failure in 2006.
The new attraction’s booking software and website is being provided by Roller Digital.
