Victorian Government signs lease for new Arthurs Seat Skylift
The new Arthurs Seat Skylift is set to become a high quality visitor attraction for the Mornington Peninsula following the completion of lease negotiations between the Victorian Government and Arthurs Seat Skylift Pty Ltd.
Following their agreement with the Victorian Government, Arthurs Seat Skylift Pty Ltd will now begin the construction of a $16 million all-weather, all-abilities access gondola with new top and bottom station buildings and associated facilities.
The lease is for 50-years and construction is expected to start soon, after all approvals have been received, with a proposed opening date in late 2016.
Parks Victoria will also commence $1.5 million of public space upgrades to complement the Skylift project, which will improve vehicle and pedestrian safety, car parking and visitors facilities across the whole precinct.
An elevated cable ride has operated at Arthurs Seat since the early 1960s, and continues to be supported by Parks Victoria’s management plan since the closure of the previous chairlift, due to safety concerns in 2006.
Commenting on the agreement, Victorian Minister for Environment, Climate Change & Water Lisa Neville stated “the Skylift project is great news for the Mornington Peninsula and Arthurs Seat State Park.
“This new, world-class tourism attraction will mean jobs and increase the length of stay for visitors to the region.”
“The all-weather, all-abilities design will be an attraction for visitors all-year round, providing great opportunities for everyone to experience the sensational views over Port Phillip.”
“The Arthurs Seat Skylift will be a significant addition to the Mornington Peninsula region, and a ‘must do’ experience for national and international visitors to Victoria.”
When open the attraction is expected to operate seven days a week with the ride taking about 40 minutes.
