Netball celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity

This weekend Netball Australia and the ANZ Championship will support Harmony Day with matches in Adelaide (Sunday 22nd March) and Sydney (Monday 23rd March) awash with orange among players, umpires, coaches, officials and spectators.

For a third consecutive year, all ANZ Championship games played in Australia during Round 4 will feature an orange Gilbert netball, San Remo ball kids and ANZ NetSetGO kids in orange t-shirts and coaches, umpires and support staff will wear Harmony Day ribbons.

As part of Netball Australia’s vision that everyone in Australia values their connection with netball, the recently launched Netball Foundation will conduct its first fundraising campaign to raise money to help underprivileged and disadvantaged girls play netball.

The Netball Foundation is a non-profit program of Netball Australia run in partnership with the Australian Sports Foundation to raise money to help women and girls achieve their full potential both on and off the netball court.

Some of the greats of the game have spoken about what netball has meant to their lives, and their desire to see less advantaged girls get the same opportunities.

Former Australian captain Kathryn Harby-Williams said she owes much of what she’s achieved in her life to netball.

Harby-Williams stated "having lost my father at a young age it provided me with a sense of belonging, a second family.

“This was important, not just for me, but also my mother who needed to be sure I was safe, cared for and happy.

“Simultaneously, I was developing important life skills such as discipline, teamwork and leadership and learning that you win some and you lose some.”

This weekend, as part of the ANZ Championship’s Harmony Day Round, netball is asking people to text NETBALL to 0477 333 999  to make a tax deductible donation to help provide netball programs, equipment and coaching to those who can least afford it.

Harmony Day is managed by the Department of Social Services (DSS) and coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
