Targa launches new event in partnership with Alpine Resorts Victoria

Following a turbulent few years for Targa after multiple tragedies at Targa Tasmania, a new event has been launched in partnership with Alpine Resorts Victoria.

Targa Tasmania is an international motorsport event which is broadcast to more than 130 countries and exposes the Tasmanian brand to major tourism markets.

However, a driver and co-driver were killed in a fatal crash on the final day of Targa Tasmania in April 2021, a day after a 68-year-old driver died in another stage of the rally race.

The return of Targa Tasmania from 2025 with new November dates put in place, the traditional time for the running of Targa High Country, marks a new chapter for the event.

In a case of 'swap the dates', Targa’s return to Australia’s best mountain road and alpine village will now be 10th to 13th April 2025, as part of a new multi-year deal that will extend the successful relationship between Targa Australia and Alpine Resorts Victoria, which started back in 2010.

The new event has a new name and a new format, which will see competitors complete several runs up Mt Buller starting from the park at the base of the mountain at Mirimbah to the peak in the Mt Buller village, hence the new name Park to Peak Mt Buller.

Targa Chief Executive Mark Perry noted "It has been a turbulent few years for Targa following multiple tragedies at Targa Tasmania. Alpine Resorts Victoria has stuck by us through this very tough time after more than ten years of running successful events together at Mt Buller and the surrounding high country region.

"This announcement begins a new chapter in our partnership and we are excited to be returning to Mt Buller and making it the home of our Targa Academy, where competitors will learn how to better prepare for the rigors of Targa competition as a key part of our improved safety measures program ensuring safer Targa events in the future.”

Mt Buller’s General Manager, Alan Arthur, said Alpine Resorts Victoria was excited to welcome Targa back to Mt Buller in 2025 adding “this event has always been a highlight of our summer events calendar, and we’re thrilled Targa is returning bigger and better than ever in April. We look forward to welcoming the competitors and car enthusiasts from right around the country.”

Park to Peak Mt Buller will kick off on Thursday 10th April with a full day of classroom learning as part of the new Targa Academy.

Friday will see on-course training held after a safety check of the Targa cars and equipment before the weekend’s competition action gets underway on Saturday morning.

Sunday will see the final competition runs before a traditional champagne shower and late- night festivities in the Targa Bar.
