Mornington Peninsula Shire secures $5 million Federal funding towards new aquatic centre

The highly anticipated Rosebud Aquatic Centre is one step closer to completion thanks to a $5 million grant from the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund.

With plans for the facility going back decades, the Mornington Peninsula Shire's new Aquatic Centre will feature a 50-metre indoor pool, learn-to-swim and warm water program pools with access ramps and family change rooms. This will be accompanied by a zero-depth water play area, wellness centre, gymnasium, fitness program rooms and café.

Local Federal MP Greg Hunt said the facility would provide much-needed swimming facilities for the Mornington Peninsula that would promote community health and wellbeing.

Hunt stated “for the past 15 years I have been supportive of the genuine need for improved aquatic facilities in the southern part of the Mornington Peninsula and to see this project start to take shape is truly extraordinary.”

Southern Aquatic Centre Action Group Convener Betty Preston said she was “over the moon” with the Federal funding, adding “I’m very pleased and I know the government has been under pressure from the community to support this project.

“We just can’t believe that the project has gotten this far and everyone just can’t wait for the pool to open.”

A community survey undertaken earlier this year found 94% of respondents supported a 50 metre indoor pool.

Mornington Peninsula Shire has capped the budget, including grants and loans, for the project at $41.57 million.

It will be designed and constructed over three years with the aim of opening in late 2020.

Mornington Peninsula Shire is also currently developing the Somerville Recreation & Community Centre.

Backed by $1.3 million funding through the Sport and Recreation Victoria’s Better Indoor Stadiums Fund, together with the commitment by Council of $4.3 million means the new stadium will feature:

• Four multi-sport indoor courts
• Female-friendly change rooms
• An umpire change room
• A first aid room
• Tournament office
• Storage and car parking.

The redevelopment will also include a refurbished a community area.
