Southern Peninsula Aquatic Centre plans scrapped

Mornington Peninsula Shire Council has voted to scrap plans to develop a new aquatic and recreation centre on the Port Phillip Bay shoreline at Rosebud.

With the Council having gone as far as inviting four architecture firms to put forward concepts for its planned Southern Peninsula Aquatic Centre, at the beginning of September, Councillors voted 5-4 to stop all work on the controversial facility.

The use of the Rosebud foreshore for the development, which is Crown land, was also repealed after councillors resolved to call on Victorian Environment Minister Ryan Smith to withdraw his approval for the use of the land.

It reverses a decision made in December last year to move forward with the project on the foreshore after several years of vigorous debate.

Budgetted to cost $34 million, the facility was to have included a 25 metre pool, warm water program pool, an aquatic play area, sauna, a fitness centre and cafe.
