Four designs submitted for Mornington Peninsula Council's Southern Peninsula Aquatic Centre

Mornington Peninsula Shire Council has revealed the four designs that it has received for its planned Southern Peninsula Aquatic Centre in Rosebud.

The controversial plan to build a new aquatic and recreation centre on the Port Phillip Bay shoreline at Rosebud is set to include a 25 metre pool, warm water program pool, an aquatic play area, sauna, a fitness centre and cafe.

Four architecture firms were chosen in June to put forward concepts that reflected the Council’s needs and values for the Centre, which is expected to cost in excess of $34 million.

Residents are being invited to tell the Council about their preferred design by the end of September, after which Councillors will choose their final design in October.

Councillors voted to go ahead with the plan for the new Centre in December last year, overuling objectors to the scheme who cite potential damage to the foreshore.

Submitted designs are:

Cox Architecture

Using familiar Cox Architecture design themes inspired by shells and boat hulls (and sails), Cox's submission says that the design "creates a unique and powerful identity for the Centre and its active foreshore precinct.”

dwp suters

The dwp suters design “draws on the rustic and rhythmic nature of typical foreshore structures such as jetties, beach path railings and boardworks to inspire a slatted facade”.

Peddle Thorp

The Peddle Thorp design draws on the ideas of waves, natural stone cliffs and sand dunes with the roof resembling "a wave".

Williams Ross

The Williams Ross design features a boardwalk that would bring together a sculptured timber community building and a 'transparent' aquatic pavillion. The design plan says “it is a place for people to gather, meet, share food and people watch.”
