Mona Vale Beach amenities facility wins architectural award

The amenities block at Mona Vale Beach on Sydney’s Northern Beaches has been announced as the winner in the Small Project Architecture category at the 2023 NSW Architecture Awards.

Completed in late 2021 as part of the upgrade of the nearby Mona Vale Surf Life Saving Club, the strikingly modern looking building recently took out The Robert Woodward Award for Small Project Architecture Award.

The Award was part of the annual NSW Architecture Awards which recognise architectural excellence in 70 projects ranging from houses and apartments to social housing and urban public furniture.

The beach amenities block - which features showers, toilets and change rooms - is located at the southern end of Mona Vale beach with a lifeguard observation room providing a 180-degree view of Mona Vale Beach and Basin Beach.

It is sympathetic to the environment being made from raw and resilient materials to withstand the coastal environment.

The block’s architectural design by Warren and Mahoney, allows natural ventilation and light to flood the brightly coloured interiors, incorporating quality and efficient fixtures and fittings.

The Australian Institute of Architects said the facility was a “robust yet poetic example of small-scale public architecture”, adding “it provides essential services whilst creating a positive social place and integrates beautifully into its natural surroundings. Its siting within the landscape is exceptional, providing both visitors and lifeguards with important views of the beach and ocean pool.”

Multi swim pass
Northern Beaches Council has also launched a multi pool pools for its pools in the suburbs of Manly and Frenchs Forest.

From today (1st July) it is introducing a multi-facility, swim only membership which will gives access to both the Warringah and Manly Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton Aquatic Centres.
