Northern Beaches Council improving outdoor hospitality in Manly

As part of the 'Streets as Shared Spaces' program, Sydney’s Northern Beaches Council will trial activating three new outdoor dining spaces in Whistler Street, The Corso and Darley Road and improving the street scape with new furniture, garden beds and planter boxes, road resurfacing treatments and the installation of low-level lighting.

COVID-19 hit the hospitality industry hard, reducing numbers of patrons to many of the Northern Beaches restaurants and cafes.

This new initiative will provide an opportunity to create places for people to support local venues, help bring communities together in a relaxing way and increase outdoor dining.

These improvements replace earlier draft plans presented to the community in November 2020 which saw overwhelming community feedback to remove the dedicated cycling components of the project through Manly CBD, reduce the on street dining areas, and retain the two-way traffic and a 30km/h speed limit.

This pilot project will continue until December 2021 with installation works being carried out over the next two weeks.

This project has been made possible from funding through the NSW Government’s Streets as Shared Spaces program. The program awards grants to NSW councils to install temporary activation projects that support communities during the pandemic and tests ideas for future installations.
