Outdoor dining expanded in Bendigo to support hospitality industry

In support of their hospitality industry, the City of Greater Bendigo is expanding their outdoor dining offer by closing half of Bull Street and rolling out barriers from Wednesday 14th October.

Fifty-two water-filled barriers will be moved into Bull Street with an expected further 40 concrete barriers to be installed throughout the week across the city centre in View Street, Mackenzie Street, Hargreaves Street, Edwards Street and King Street.

Director Strategy and Growth Bernie O’Sullivan said City staff had met with 80 venues to discuss expanding their outdoor dining spaces and were processing 42 local laws applications.

O’Sullivan advised “we have had really positive discussions with hospitality traders across Greater Bendigo to talk about their options. For some, they have made the most of the footpath, others have elected to use a few car parking spaces and some have decided they are happy to keep operating with the space they have.

“Where businesses have expanded into car parks, City staff are supporting them to investigate installing temporary, adjustable platforms and ramps, so these spaces are accessible and comfortable.”

The City has received a $500,000 Victorian Government grant to support improving public infrastructure for the purpose of expanding outdoor dining and activating public spaces.

Hospitality businesses can also apply for a $5,000 grant from Business Victoria to support the purchase of outdoor furniture, such as additional tables and chairs and umbrellas.

Motorists will still be able to access Bull Street from Hargreaves Street and the closure is expected to be in place until 30th June 2021 but may be reviewed earlier, subject to COVID-19 restrictions.
