Mitzevich appointed Art Gallery SA's Youngest Director
40-year-old Nick Mitzevich has been appointed the new director of the Art Gallery of South Australia, the youngest in the gallery's 129-year history.
Mitzevich is currently director of the University of Queensland Art Museum in Brisbane and was formerly director of the Newcastle Art Gallery.
Art Gallery of South Australia Chairman Michael Abbott announced that the new director's experience in managing public art museums were characterised by innovation and bold strategic vision, with impressive success in increasing visitor numbers, developing programs and collections and building philanthropic and corporate support.
"Over the past nine years, he has led two quite different art museums through a period of restructure, renewal and redevelopment and his record of achievement has been outstanding," the Chairman said in a statement.
"We believe he has the drive, initiative and vision that the Art Gallery of South Australia needs for its future."
Mitzevich said the Art Gallery of South Australia had a dynamic and inspiring history stated "I look forward to enhancing the extraordinary collection and continuing to enlighten, surprise and stimulate visitors with accessible and thoughtful programs."
SA Premier and Arts Minister Mike Rann said Mitzevich would bring an enviable combination of youth, energy and experience to the important role, stating "South Australians can look forward to a revitalised art gallery under his leadership."
Mitzevich is expected to take up his new role in late July, replacing Christopher Menz who declined to renew his contract in January over funding concerns.
